History:
Byerly is around 35 years old. Never married. No serious entanglements of any kind. Publically, he's a bit of a wastrel. He's supported by two of his cousins, largely for spying on each other for them and in gratitude for spying.
One of the paying cousins, Richars, he hates. He continues to accept his money mostly because he enjoys taking things from Richars that Richars would prefer not to give. Also, by accepting his money, which is intermittant, he can keep an eye on Richars location and plans, and as long as Richars believes that Byerly likes him, Byerly can guide the information Richars receives.

The other cousin, count_dono, pays him largely in compensation for his part in foiling Richars bid to get the countship, and for continued information. Dono is Byerly's favorite person in the world, after Dono's daughter Isabel, but he doesn't totally confide in him, although he does feel guilty about using Dono to fund his cover operation.

Byerly works for the Imperium as a domestic spy. He gets himself invited to parties, great and small, to keep a finger on the pulse of the gossip. He has a reputation for discretion and he relaxes people with his witty insouciance. He is controlled, or "handled" by lady_alys Vorpatril. He reports back to her and receives directives from her.

By is a bit of a maverick and often works independantly, probably more than he should. He is constantly being bumped up and down paygrades as reward and punishment for the things he does that he should or should not be doing. The job means alot to him, but the pay and rank mean less. As long as he has enough money to keep up appearances, he is content. Actually, he feels it's better when he's a bit cash poor as it enables him to allow other people to buy him drinks and dinner. He's found when he does that, people feel like he is obligated to listen to their stories, and are more inclined to tell them.

Byerly lives in an apartment in Vorbarr Sultana, in what was once a more fashionable district, but has now gone to seed. He's owned the building, through a series of agents, for a number of years, because he found it a nuisance that it kept getting sold. The rent on the other apartments pays for the building, and the management, so Byerly doesn't bother too much about that anymore. Although he still complains that the rent is too high when he needs a justification for being cash-strapped.
